Breeding Depiction (Transparent).png

Breeding is the process of pairing two adult Dragons, Level 4 or higher, together in the Breeding Den to obtain other Dragons. The Breeding Den is the only place where Dragons can breed, and the amount of time the process takes is determined by the Elements and type of the parents. Parent elements and types also determine which offspring are produced. The longer it takes to breed a Dragon, typically the rarer the Dragon will be. Dragons with more advanced Elements and a higher rarity take more time to breed and incubate. Breeding times can vary from 30 seconds for a Fire Dragon to 4 days for Divine, Ancient, or Tyrant Dragons, and are affected by VIP Status and other factors.

Breeding Basics

Breeding Button.png
  • Dragons must be Level 4 or higher to breed.
  • Each parent passes at least one Element to their offspring (unless exceptions occur).
  • The type classification of a Dragon does not affect breeding outcome.
  • Breeding lower-level Dragons typically produces lower-rarity offspring.
  • Breeding higher-level Dragons typically produces higher-rarity offspring.

Dragons that can be bred at all times always appear in the Main Shop. Some Dragons are not normally obtained through standard breeding, they may be awarded through events, or be offered for limited-time breeding, as in the case of Dragon of the Week and Dragon of the Month. Additionally, Chronos, Boss Dragons and Clan Dragons cannot be obtained through breeding.

Breeding Principles

When breeding two Dragons, there is usually no guarantee of what Dragon is obtained. The exception is when there is only one possible outcome, such as when using two single-Element Dragons of the same Element. For example, breeding a Fire Dragon + a Fire Dragon can only result in a Fire Dragon. Baby Dragons usually inherit one or more Elements from each parent, except for Special Element Dragons. Another exception is a Double Egg Relic is used, which gives the choice of outcome between two possible random outcomes, for a period of 12 hours, for all attempted breedings during that period.

Additionally, the Trainer cannot obtain, through breeding, Dragons with Elements that are higher than the Trainer's Level allows. For example, if the Trainer manages to obtain an Agent Dragon from the Dragon League, and they are under Level 15 (when the Metal Element is unlocked), they can hatch the Agent Dragon and breed it with other Dragons, but the Agent Dragon won't pass the Metal Element until the Trainer reaches Level 15 (or the Void Element until Level 25), only the Earth Element Element is passed on.

Breeding the same pair of Dragons multiple times can provide different results, since the Dragon species that hatches is chosen at random based on the parent's available Elements. Breeding outcomes for a specific Dragon, or Dragon of higher rarity, may require many breeding attempts. The only exception is for Guaranteed-Breedable Dragons, Dragons that result from certain Elemental pairs. The Possible Results option of the Breeding Den is a helpful tool to determine what outcome a breeding pair may produce.

Breeding Calculator

The DML Planner Breeding function calculates Dragon breeding in different modes:

  • Normal breeding mode
    • Two parents are selected to display all possible outcomes, their odds, breeding time and hatch time.
  • Reverse breeding mode
    • A desired result Dragon is selected to display all possible parent combinations, their chances, breed time, and the type and number of offspring.
  • Elements breeding mode
    • Three or four (if required) Elements are selected to determine all possible combinations, their chances, breed time, and the type and number of offspring.

Special Element Dragons

Legendary, Divine, Ancient, and Tyrant type/rarity Dragons don't pass their own Elements in Breeding, instead they pass a wild card Element. A wild card Element is a randomly selected Base Dragon (or non-special) Element, that is added to the pool of possible outcomes. Primal Elements also pass a wild card Element, though Primal Dragons can additionally pass one of their other elements to the breeding. When two Special Element Dragons are bred together, they both pass a wildcard to the breeding attempt. However, if two Special Element Dragons each pass a wild card-only, a Dual Dragon cannot be created.

The Element passed by a Special Element parent can be any Base Dragon Element, it does not matter if the parent possesses the Element, or if the Element is (awoken or unawoken), as long as it is unlocked through Player Level and its associated Hall of Fame milestone.

Additionally, these Special Dragons do not follow the general breeding principles, as Legendary Dragons can be obtained either through specific combinations or through a limited-time breeding event, while some Divine and Ancient Dragons are made breedable only extremely rarely.

VIP Dragons

Breeding VIP Dragons is done the same way as breeding Normally-Breedable Dragons, the difference being that a certain VIP Level must be reached before these Dragons can be bred or purchased. Additionally, VIP Dragons can only be bred while VIP Status is active. Once a VIP Dragon has been bred, it is removed from possible breeding outcomes, meaning it is only available for purchase or through methods other than breeding.

Incompatible Combinations

Incompatible Elements.png

There are hundreds of different breeding combinations to obtain Dragons, so some Dragons can be bred from more than one pairing combination. There are, however, some Dragons that are incompatible and cannot be bred together, these are:

Some hybrid Dragons cannot be bread from a Single-Element Dragon and can only be obtained using a hybrid + hybrid combination, these Dragons are:

Additionally, the above Dragons are the only ones that can be paired in specific combinations to obtain Breedable Legendaries.

Enchanted Breeding

Enchanted Breeding Button.png

See Breeding Den for information on upgrading the den.

Breeding Enchantment Dragons can only be done following specific criteria. Required Dragons must be enchanted to certain levels and paired in predetermined combinations to obtain Enchantment Dragons. In addition to this, the Breeding Den must be upgraded to certain levels in accordance with the requirements of the desired Dragon.

Limited-Time Breeding

Featured Dragon Ship.png

Limited-Time Breeding is any breeding event or occasion whose sole purpose is to successfully breed one or more Limited-Time Dragons in the allotted time, with the Dragon(s) being the reward.

Breeding Tokens

See Token Dragons for all Breeding Tokens.

Breeding Tokens Breeding Token Icon.png are special items that activate instantly upon obtaining. They provide an opportunity to breed a Limited-Time Dragon for either an indefinite or temporary period of time. These Dragons follow the same breeding principles as Normally-Breedable Dragons.

Five Breeding Tokens are obtained from the Dragon Collector Leaderboard while others are obtained through events. Once a token is obtained, a confirmation screen appears, giving the Trainer the option to close it through the   ok   button, or to breed the Dragon by pressing the Go To Breeding button. If a token is obtained for a Dragon already activated through another token, the period of time, during which the Dragon is available for breeding, is extended.

Once a Dragon with a permanent Breeding Token has been bred, such as those obtained through the Dragon Collector Leaderboard, it is removed from the possible breeding outcomes, it is only available for purchase or through methods other than breeding.

Events

See Castle Events, Clan Events and Chain Breeding Events for more information and for the individual events.

  • Breeding Dragons is one method for earning points in Castle and Arcade events.
  • During some Clan Events, breeding Dragons is one of the Clan Quest objectives that awards items necessary for competing.
  • Chain Breeding Events are events for breeding specific Dragons in a pre-determined order to obtain a prize Dragon.

Dragon of the Week

For the duration of one week, a limited Bi-Elemental or Tri-Elemental Dragon, classified as Rare or higher, is made available for breeding using two specific Dragons.

In extremely rare cases, a Legendary, Divine, or Ancient Dragon can be made available as a Dragon of the Week.
See Dragon of the Week for more information.

Lucky Breeding
Lucky Breeding Meter.png

Breeding - Lucky Breeding.png

If the current Dragon of the Week is not yet owned, the Lucky Breeding Lucky Breeding 2 Icon.png feature appears inside the Breeding Den. Every unsuccessful Dragon of the Week breeding attempt, when using the correct parents, adds one point to the Luck meter. The Luck meter begins at 0, and requires a set number of points to fill. Once the meter is filled, the next breeding attempt is guaranteed to result in the week's Dragon. Once the desired egg reaches the Hatchery, the feature disappears. The feature, its meter count, and guaranteed breeding also reset when the current Dragon of the Week event ends, so a guaranteed breeding outcome on the meter (if obtained) must be used/bred before that time. Pressing the i button above the meter opens a dialogue (right) which provides a brief feature explanation.

Important Icon.png

Note: The action of collecting Luck does not increase breeding odds as the meter count increases; rather, breeding odds remain the same until after the meter is full, which instantly increase the odds to 100%, guaranteeing the next correctly paired outcome. Lucky Breeding does not appear for Trainers who own the current Dragon of the Week.

Dragon of the Month

See Dragon of the Month for more information.

For the duration of one month, a limited Legendary Dragon is made available for breeding using parents that, together, have four specific Elements.

Flash Breeding

Lantern Dragon Promotion (Leapin' Lanterns).jpg

For a very short period of time, usually only a few days, a Dragon is made available for breeding using Dragons that, together, have a given number of specific Elements. Currently, the only Dragon that was flash-breedable was the Lantern Dragon.

Hatching

Once two Dragons are sent to the Breeding Den, they breed for a period of time to produce one egg. Eggs must be incubated in the Hatchery until they are ready to hatch. Once the incubation period is complete, the baby can be hatched from its shell and placed into a habitat or sold on the spot.

See Hatching for more information.

Breeding Length Calculation

The time it takes to breed a Dragon successfully is determined by its Elements and rarity, and an active VIP Status of Level 2 or higher reduces the amount of time by 20%.

Time Required (in hours) = (Rarity Factor + Elemental Factor) * VIP Factor

Rarity Factor

Elemental Factor

The Element Factor applies only to the Elements of a Dragon that do not require awakening. Thus, only the base Element applies to these Dragons because their secondary Elements must be awoken. As such, all Dragons with that base Element have the same breeding time, regardless of their other Elements.

VIP Factor

  • Active VIP (VIP Level 2 or higher) = 0.8
  • Inactive VIP/VIP Level 1 = 1

Examples

First Example
The Classical Dragon is classified as Common and possesses the Light & Wind Elements.

  • Breeding Time = ((8 + 2) + 0) * VIP Factor
  • Breeding Time = 10 * VIP Factor

Thus, without VIP, the breeding time is 10 hours hours while with VIP, the breeding time is 8 hours.

Second Example
The Storm Dragon is classified as Epic and possesses the Wind, Energy & Void Elements.

  • Breeding Time = ((2 + 6 + 6) + 8) * VIP Factor
  • Breeding Time = 22 * VIP Factor

Thus, without VIP, the breeding time is 22 hours hours while with VIP, the breeding time is 17 hours and 36 minutes.

Exceptions

The following Dragons do not follow the above formula and thus have their own breeding time.

Time Reduction

See Time Reduction for the Breeding Den for more information.

Aside from active Level 2 VIP Status, which reduces the breeding and hatching time by 20%, any ongoing breeding time is also reduced by 6 hours when a Chronosian Seal is forged or Chronos's power is used, and by 5 minutes for each Timer Boost received from visiting Trainers. Additionally, any one individual breeding is reduced by 8 hours when a Relic of Breeding is used. The entire breeding time can be sped up in exchange for Gems, and videos may be offered to reduce ongoing breeding time by 30 minutes per video when the Yellow-Bordered Time Reduction Icon.png icon appears above the Breeding Den. Lastly, a one-time daily offer may appear to reduce breeding time by half in exchange for watching a video ad; the offer disappears if not used, when offered.
