• Regular spaces at the beginning of a line are a mediawiki shortcut for doing a preformatted <pre>content</pre> code block, which is why some text gives:

some text

• Where using {{sp}}some text instead gives:

 some text

• Note that {{sp}} is treated like a text character, so regular spaces on either side of {{sp}} are preserved.
  • For example, This is {{sp}} some text with multiple spaces gives (3 spaces in total are displayed):

This is   some text with multiple spaces

Inserts the HTML entity for a non-breaking space (&nbsp;), where a space would otherwise be stripped or misinterpreted by MediaWiki, such as multiple spaces in a row, or at the beginning/end of a table cell, or paragraph text where regular spaces cause a <pre> block instead.
